AQUON One is a win-win for owners AND the environment. The motor catamaran pioneers a holistic approach that redefines sustainable yachting:
Catamarans offer many advantages, especially in terms of their stability, their space and comfort.
AQUON One is the first commercial solar- and hydrogen-powered motor catamaran to enter the market in 2024. The “pocket superyacht” is built by Latitude Yachts. AQUON One and all components of its energy system are undergoing certification by the classification society DNV for the highest safety standards. To learn more, please contact us.
AQUON One is manufactured by European shipyard Latitude Yachts in Riga, Latvia. The full-service shipyard has an outstanding reputation in the superyacht sector. The production of ocean-class trimarans (e.g. the 53m Galaxy of Happiness) is just one prominent showcase. We chose them because Latitude executes even the most complex and sophisticated production tasks in a well-organized and responsible manner – both towards clients, their own staff and the environment.
64-foot AQUON One is a “pocket” superyacht with a quality finishing and build at much higher standards than your typical catamaran of this size. The “smart ship” features state-of-the-art technology onboard and cruises at zero emissions using only renewable energy (solar & green hydrogen). Yet, the sustainable yacht goes one step further, producing and storing its own green energy onboard. This makes the AQUON One self-sufficient and drastically reduces its operating costs. The price range for AQUON One reflects these innovations. For more specific information, please contact us.
The legal limit is a maximum of 12 people overnight. The number of beds depends on the choice of cabin layout, with each cabin sleeping two adults. You can choose between three layout options:
Complete surfaces: 250 square meters (sm)
AQUON One is built to last 27 days at anchor without sunlight, using an average power of 3 kW. For comparison: A washing machine requires 2 kW, a large flat-screen TV 0.15 kW.
Hydrogen offers advantages in terms of the stored energy density and weight compared to a full battery-electric ship. AQUON One stores the solar energy in batteries or the energy system transforms it into green hydrogen stored in tanks. To save the same amount of energy only in batteries would require batteries with a weight equivalent to that of the entire yacht which would also be extremely expensive.
AQUON One’s energy system saves one-third of the battery storage and reserves this extra power for emergency situations. It allows a range of 20 nm. Additionally, customers can opt for the installation of a diesel generator backup with the capacity to produce energy to enjoy all onboard appliances for up to 64 hours and to travel at cruising speed for 20 hours.
When produced from renewable energy sources, hydrogen is a sustainable energy source eliminating emissions and noise. The only exhaust from a fuel cell is clean water vapor and oxygen-reduced air. By producing its own hydrogen on board from solar energy, AQUON One creates zero emissions and becomes independent from shore energy. Even if AQUON One were to refuel with hydrogen produced ashore from natural gas, instead of using its own hydrogen made from renewable energy, AQUON ONE is still more sustainable than a diesel-powered yacht. Energy storage as hydrogen is also much lighter than batteries, increasing the cruising range and efficiency of a fuel-cell-electric yacht compared to a battery-electric yacht. Fuel cells power electric motors silently, reducing noise pollution dramatically.
The energy system is safe and fulfills the highest technical standards. The entire system, as well as each individual component, is certified by the classification society DNV. There is a variety of use cases from shore and sea on the market which already proof that hydrogen is a safe propulsion option, i.e. the research vessel “Energy Observer”, military submarines, and cars (Toyota, Daimler, Hyundai). Of course, we will explain the safe handling and operation of the system, and catamaran to the owner/captain. Information on this will also be included in the manual.
AQUON One has its own sustainable “power plant” on board: When it is sunny and the yacht is at anchor, the photovoltaic (PV) system generates an energy surplus which helps keep the energy storage full. With average energy consumption behavior, the catamaran can be self-sufficient. Refueling is only necessary when AQUON One cruises at higher speeds over some time, consuming all the energy stored in its hydrogen tanks. In this case, there are two options:
The only emissions of hydrogen fuel cells are water vapor. AQUON One is not powered by a combustion engine, so there are no CO2 and particulate emissions. AQUON One cruises at zero emission, if only the green hydrogen produced from renewable solar power onboard is used. The reduced noise and vibration from the electric engine are favorable for marine life. The energy system is so efficient, that even when charged with non-renewable electricity and/or refueled with non-renewable hydrogen, it is much more sustainable than a diesel yacht. The catamaran’s innovative grey and black water system reduces the contamination of seawater. The interior of the catamaran also contains recycled and biodegradable materials.
Ideal cruising areas for AQUON One are mild and warm climates as well as regular sunshine. The Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, the Baltics, and Scandinavia (Spring to Fall) create excellent surroundings for an optimal experience with AQUON One. Please contact us if you are not sure whether AQUON One is suitable for your favorite cruising destination(s).
Easy handling by one person with a joystick is possible. The smart ship system onboard is planned to include a docking support system and also facilitate navigation and ship handling overall. For docking operations, help is needed in order to secure the mooring lines. Required documents depend on the country. Generally, handling AQUON One requires an offshore/coastal recreational boating license.
Hydrogen – produced from natural gas – is a commodity and is available everywhere. There are currently limitations to the availability of hydrogen produced from renewable sources. However, we can see a huge interest in green hydrogen as its usage in the maritime sector is increasing. With many countries working on a hydrogen strategy, the availability of green hydrogen fueling stations will increase in the coming years.
Award-winning Italian designer Christian Grande and his team created the organic design of AQUON One. The timeless design features clean lines and innovative natural materials on the interior. It is inspired by the elegant shape and silent movements of the oceanic manta ray, which can travel long ranges of up to 1000 km. All aspects of the exterior and interior follow the sustainability principle.
You can give your AQUON One a personal touch, such as by choosing the color of the exterior/hull. Our designers can recommend a range of suitable color options. You may also customize the cabin layout to your preferences.
Founder Adrian Beer: “I have been on the water ever since I was a little boy but my frustration was always that great developments and achievements or innovations – made across the world – had not found their way into yachting. The largest problem is the propulsion, where 99% of all yachts still run on diesel or petrol. But also in terms of the design, the energy efficiency onboard, the digital connectedness, and the materials used. There was just too much potential. True luxury does not leave an impact. It is not disturbed by the smell of diesel or the noise of a loud generator. We redefine sustainable luxury for an independent lifestyle.”
