Smart Home at Sea

It might not always seem like it, but we live in a smart world. Thanks to incredible advances in numerous aspects of technology, we now have smart cars and smart homes that are able to provide the user with unimaginable control over their environment – or, should they prefer, unprecedented levels of autonomy, allowing machines and devices to tick along without human interference. The best yachts have always been at the cutting-edge of innovation and engineering, and smart yachts are no exception, taking the best technology from cars and homes, and refining them for the particular challenges and requirements of the sea.

Intelligent Yachting

A smart yacht should give the user total control and awareness of navigation and energy, while also allowing them to create the perfect living conditions when it comes to heating and lighting, sound and vision. A smart yacht will offer assistance with docking and route management, while fridges, TVs, ovens and bathrooms will embrace the Internet Of Things concept, adjusting to taste, learning individual requirements and self-monitoring for ease of maintenance. There will be keyless remote access control, and the most precise efficiency monitoring imaginable. Think of it like this: if anything can be computerised and controlled by an app to the betterment of the overall yachting experience, it should be.

Technology is now such an essential part of the yachting industry that one smart yacht, Adonis, made international headlines in 2019 when it was the first boat to be presented at a tech conference rather than a boat show. This yacht boasted an interface called Angel that integrated all technology on the boat and could be controlled from touch screens – Smart Mirrors – that were located throughout the yacht. This could be accessed through voice control or face recognition, and would automatically adjust environmental controls such as heating or lighting for individual preferences. Angel could control the on-board drone and feed content directly to your closest screen, and like a supercharged Alexa, it would suggest what you wore each day depending on personal taste, weather and the schedule.

Smart, Sustainable, Self-Sufficient

Smart tech is even more essential for sustainable yachts such as AQUON One catamaran, where energy production and consumption is such an important part of the overall design philosophy. AQUON has collaborated with smart tech experts Aleon to create a secure, simple system that allows users to monitor the energy stored by solar panels or see battery usage at the touch of a button, as well as adjust the lighting, music and ventilation for personal tastes. Energy use can be monitored on a floor-by-floor basis, while navigation can be made easier by using smart tech to adjust for the amount of energy that will be consumed and the expected weather conditions. It is a smart home at sea, an intelligent catamaran with a smart energy management system and connected devices. This isn’t just about luxury. It’s about providing users with more control and greater understanding of a complex machine, creating a more user-friendly and fulfilling experience for boat owners.
